ポール・ギルバートのニュー・アルバム、『VIBRATO』の秘密
ポール・ギルバートがニューアルバム『VIBRATO』を発表した。
ポールの作品やライブ演奏に接するたびに思うことがある。それは、ポールが素晴らしいギタリストやシンガーであるだけでなく、真のエンターティナーであるということだ。ギターや歌を通じてどれだけ聴衆や観衆をよろこばせることができるか…。これに心血を注いでいるような気がする。
そして、ロックへの愛情。先日のウェンブリ―でのコンサートでも先人の偉大なる遺産をカバーしていたが、こうしたパフォーマンスはポールのロックへの愛情と私は受けとめている。今回の『VIBRATO』でもその愛情は爆発しきっている。
そんなポールから、新作『VIBRATO』に対するメッセージが届けられた。今日はそれを紹介する。
以下はポールからのメッセージ；
『VIBRATO』というニュー・アルバムを発表したんだ。ひとつ残らずギターの音はマーシャルで録音したよ。何しろカズーにも自分のマーシャルを使ったぐらいなんだから！
「Vibrato」という曲のギター・ソロを録音していた時、ギターを置いて純粋で音楽的なソロを作り込むことにした。普通のソロ・フレーズや指グセによるソロにはしたくなかったんだ。そこで、エレクトリック・カズー（そう、僕はエレクトリック・カズーを持ってるのさ！）を自分の2061Xにつないでボリュームを上げた。マーシャルにつないだまま気に入ったメロディやフレーズが出てくるまでソロをハミングして、それを録音した。その後、プレイバックを聴いてギターでそれをどう弾くか研究したんだ。ミックスの時には元々のカズーのトラックは使わなかったんだけど、そのギター・ソロを聞いた時に、フレーズがいかに歌っているかわかってもらえるといいな。もちろん最終的にギター・ソロを録音した時にも2061Xを使ったよ。
『VIBRATO』のギターはバンドと同時に演奏して録音したんだ。ステレオにしたかったのでギターの信号をLehleのP-Split Boxに通してから2台のMXRのPhase90につないだ。そして、それぞれのPhase90 のスピードを少しズラして設定したんだ。それで激ワイドなステレオ効果が実現したのさ。もちろんステレオにするにはアンプが2台必要だよ。そこで2061Xと1987Xを使ったんだ。
両方ともビンテージ・ヘッドのリイシューだから、70年代の僕のお気に入りアルバムで聞かれるようなロック・サウンドに仕上げてくれた。THDのHot Plateを両方のヘッドに使ってボリューム・アップしたんだけど、適度な音量に抑えたよ。スピーカーにはVintageModernの2×12”コンボ(2266C)を2台使った。2266Cのヘッドはバイパスしてスピーカーだけを鳴らした。
レコーディングの時、バンドのみんなとすべての機材を同じ部屋に結集させたんだ（レコーディング・エンジニアすらもね！）。ドラムからギター・アンプのスピーカーをそむけてセットしたよ（ドラムのマイクがギターの音を拾わないようにね）。それで今度はギター・アンプのマイクがドラムの音を拾わないようにボリュームがアップした。もちろん、少しは音を拾っちゃうんだけど、僕とバンドでとてもよいライブ・パフォーマンスの状態にすることができた。作業が早くなることも知ったよ。そういうシチュエーションであれば、少しぐらいの音かぶりは平気なんだ。実際、具合のいいルーム・サウンドも加わったしね！
アルバム1曲目の「Enemies（In Jail）」という曲をシゲさん（筆者注：私のこと…）に聞かせるのを楽しみにしてるんだ。シゲさんはフランク・ザッパのファンでエキスパートでもあるんだよ。僕は子供のころ『Zoot Allures』というアルバムを持っていた。
それに「Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow」と「Cosmic Debris」というシングル盤も持っていたんだ。（訳者注：写真はポールが持っていたシングル盤の曲が収録されているフランク・ザッパのアルバム『Apostriphe(')』）
でも自分の音楽はフランク・ザッパには影響を受けていない…今まではね！「Enemies (In Jail)」は「言葉をしゃべる」セクションがある僕の最初の曲なんだ。エレクトリック・ピアノ・ソロの間、「幸せとは何ぞや」というユーモラスな哲学的説明を入れたんだ。予定はしていなかったんだけどね。実際、このしゃべるパートのことはバンドや僕がプレイバックを聴いている時までは考えてもみなかったんだよ。ちょっとバンドのみんなを笑わせるためにそれを始めたんだ。でも、それがすごくうまくマッチするし、すごくフランク・ザッパのスタイルっぽいことがわかった。だからシゲさんがこの曲を気に入ってくれることを願ってるんだ。そして、来年の1月の僕のバンドのツアーでこの曲を演奏するのをとても楽しみにしているんだ。（『VIBRATO』に入っている他の曲もね！）

I have just released a new album called VIBRATO, and every note of guitar was recorded with a Marshall amp. I even played a kazoo through my Marshall amp! When I was recording the solo for the song, "Vibrato," I decided to put my guitar down, and compose the solo with pure musical intention. I didn't want to be influenced by my usual guitar licks and fingering patterns. So I plugged my electric kazoo (Yes, I have an electric kazoo) into my Marshall 2061x and cranked it up. I hummed the solo through the Marshall until I had the melodies and phrases that I liked. Then I recorded it. Then I played it back and learned how to play it on the guitar. When I mixed the song, I didn't use the original kazoo track, but when you listen to the guitar solo, I hope you can hear how it "sings." And of course, I played my guitar through the same Marshall 2061x when I did the final solo.
Most of my guitar parts on VIBRATO were recorded live with the band. I wanted to use a stereo sound, so I split my signal with a Lehle P-Split box, and then ran the two outputs into two MXR Phase 90 pedals. Each Phase 90 has a "Speed" knob, and I set them slightly different from each other. That gave me a very wide stereo sound. Of course, for stereo, I needed two amps. So I used my Marshall 2061x and Marshall 1987x heads. These are both vintage reissue heads, so they give me the rock sound from my favorite albums of the 70s. I used a THD Hot Plate for each head, so I could crank them up, but keep the volume at a reasonable level. For speakers, I used two Vintage Modern 2 x 12 combo amps. I bypassed the heads, and went straight in to the speakers.
Everyone in the band and all the equipment was in the same room when we recorded (even the recording engineer!) So I faced my speakers away from the drums (to reduce leakage into the drum mics.) And I cranked up my amps, so the drums wouldn't leak into the mics for my amps. Of course, there is a small amount of leakage, but the band and I were committed to getting good live performances, so we knew that we wouldn't be fixing things later. In that situation, a little leakage is fine. In fact, it can add a nice room sound to the mix!
I am excited to let Shige-san hear the first song on the album which is called "Enemies (In Jail).." I know that Shige-san is a Frank Zappa fan and expert. I had the Frank Zappa album called "Zoot Allures" when I was a kid. I also had the single with "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" and "Cosmic Debris," but I never used my Frank Zappa influence in my own music... until now! "Enemies (In Jail)" is my first song with a "spoken word" section. During the electric piano solo, I give a humorous philosophical description of "what happiness really is." I didn't plan this part. In fact, I didn't think about the spoken word part until the band and I were listening the playback of the song. I just started to do it to make the band laugh. But then I realized that it really worked well, and is very much in the Frank Zappa style. So I hope Shige-san will approve of this song. And I'm really excited to play it (and other songs from the VIBRATO album) when I come for my tour in January!
